The Whirls of Pontar - a larp set in The Witcher world produced by LarpVenture - is just around the corner. The scenario team is already working on juicy storylines, and in the meantime, we want to show you what the character sheets and other story materials that you will receive from us before the game will look like.

A Short History

Soon, we will start publishing short online entries about important events that have taken place in Tassels-Flochburg in recent years. They will give you a closer look at the background of our game and the publicly known things that involved the town's residents and may have been heard by visitors.

Before the game, we will collect them all in a document that we will make available to players in two versions: a more detailed one for residents and a more superficial one for visitors and groups that have only recently been in town.

You can expect that some groups will be more involved in some of these events, know a little more about them, or know the true versions of events if they differ from the publicly reported rumors. In this case, this knowledge will be included in the Group Sheet.

In summary, A Short History is:

  • important events published as posts on social media
  • then collected as one document available to people playing
  • document available in two versions: for locals and newcomers to the town
  • it may happen that some groups will know more or know the secret versions of events

Group Sheet

The next level of knowledge will be the Group Sheet - a document available to all people belonging to it. You will find in it everything the group knows, how it approaches other groups and what it strives for. It will also contain a list of all the characters that are part of the group, including information on who has which role or position. If any characters in the group have distinctive appearance or clothing features, e.g. they are injured or dress inappropriately for their actual status, this will also be noted.

The Group Sheet will contain all the storylines, goals and motivations of a group in the village. We will make sure that each of them, in addition to an interesting background, is also related to an activity that can be undertaken during the fair. Even if the activity itself is not explicitly stated, it will signal a problem that will arise if the issue is not resolved.

The Group Sheet shows the perspective of the group as a whole, but not all people in the group have to see everything the same way. Therefore, it may be that some characters have a different opinion on certain issues - in that case, it will be clearly stated in the Character Sheet.

In summary, the Group Sheet provides:

  • description of the group - only for people in the group, the same for everyone, everything the group knows
  • attitude towards other groups and what it is based on, what kind of interactions it causes
  • list of people with their distinctive features, function/place - although characters may have hidden motivations
  • plots for the group, current motivations and goals related to some action at the fair
  • stakes for the group, i.e. what happens if the group does not achieve its goals

Character Sheet

The deepest level of knowledge is the individual Character Sheet. Its content is addressed only to the person playing the character. The information contained therein describes not only the character, but also his or her individual perspective on the world and approach to the group.

It is important to note that the entries in the Character Sheet can modify the entries in the Group Sheet, but it will be explained why the character has a different perspective on certain issues.

The Character Sheet is a strong foundation that will allow players to embody a multi-dimentional person. It will not be a literary story full of complexities from the past that will need to be memorized, but a collection of characteristics that will make it easier to step into their shoes and see the world through their eyes.

About me section

Each character will be designed in the same way and will answer the following questions to the person playing them:

  1. Motto - a guiding quote, a summary of the character in one sentence. For example: what you can do today, do the day after tomorrow, you'll have two days off.
  2. Nature - an archetype, something that defines the character and will be possible to act out. For example: one can that money can't buy happiness, but you regularly buy yourself happiness that your family home doesn't give you.
  3. Boundary - something the character will not cross, and if they do, they will no longer be the same character. For example: you abhor violence, you will never cause suffering or harm to any living being, even if it involves your own harm.
  4. Price - soft underbelly, something that can make the character cross their boundary. For example: you will do anything for your sick daughter, if only you can find a way to relieve her illness, you will even sacrifice yourself.

Other sections

In addition to the previous section, which summarizes the character's attitude and way of thinking as well as the principles that guide them in life, the Character Sheet will have three more sections:

  1. About the group: explains why the character is in the group and what need the character fulfills. It also shows any discrepancies from the group sheet and the character's secret motivations. For example: your group hates group X, but your loved one is a member of it, so you secretly support their activities.
  2. About the town: reports from outside the group that are important for the character and what to do about it in the game. New relationships and connections will certainly be established during the game. For example: character X is your childhood friend, but since they started hanging out with group Y, your relations have weakened. The fair seems a good reason to change that.
  3. About the fair: describes what the character might find particularly interesting, gives ideas for several interesting activities, and the establishment of new interactions. For example: try your luck in a card tournament, the prize provided would allow you to arrange your life anew.

What character will you be?

The Whirlpools of Pontar allow you to choose the group that suits you best when you buy your ticket. Several of the 24 groups are already sold out, so it's worth hurrying with your choice. Descriptions of all groups can be found in a separate document.

Groups must have a certain minimum number of people to form. Signing up with friends is always a good idea and gives you a discount of up to -15% (see details). In the event that a given group does not form, we will offer the people who sign up a group that best meets the preferences entered in the form.

Characters will be assigned based on preferences in the sign-up form to provide players with the best possible experience in the game. Among other things, we ask about what kind of things you want to do in the game, what threads are attractive to you, what kind of boundaries seem interesting to you to explore, whether you have any inspirations for the game in mind, or skills that you want to use during the game. Thoughtful answers will help us match characters to players and ensure good fun.
